Like a lot of promoters, Bad Timing started when we didn't have anywhere
to hear, play or DJ the kind of music we wanted to hear in the place where
we live, especially after the Spare Toasters night (1999-2001) finished.
Starting in November 2001 we started putting on ourselves and likeminded DJs and local bands. From 2002, we started to bring in bands from outside Cambridge booking international and UK touring artists and helping to drag the city
onto the touring circuit for the music we like, naturally evolving over the years to include electronica/electro, lofi, noise, early and self-invented electronics, weird pop, experimental and other random things.
Since then Bad Timing has brought live music to Cambridge from
across the world and made connections between artists from Cambridge and elsewhere.
collaborations and special projects
We have an ongoing collaboration with
artist-run warehouse space
which opened in 2011. Our first project there was based around our self-built nano-venue Self Assembly, with associated live events and audio and visual works created on site, as part of Aid & Abet's Art As A Full Time Hobby show in July 2011. See images from Self Assembly .
Bad Timing was also a programming partner in
, the second one-day music and arts festival organised by
near Cambridge in September 2011.
We also have past and planned events with Cambridge Super-8 and co-promote occasional gigs with other local promoters.
Past collaborations include special events with Kosmische, Enter: Unknown Territories festival and innovative UK promoters network Logarhythm including the likes of Capsule, Qujunktions and Lumin.
Bad Timing has had several incarnations as a collective. Since January 2006 it has been curated by co-founder Jo Brook when former members decided to concentrate on their own music-making and label activities in Cambridge and elsewhere.
And finally ... our second birthday event was the setting
for an official Guinness World Record for Solo Record Breaking,
set by Janek Schaefer.
